Short, honest notes from Dr Alten du Plessis on rest, travel and the journey of life.
I write these the way I would talk to you on the last evening of a good trip: unhurried, honest, and more interested in what is true than in what sells. Choose one to read in full.
A walk along the Eerste River in Stellenbosch
I usually run past the art along the Eerste River without seeing it. A torn ankle ligament slowed me to a walk, and one morning I gave the mile my full attention: sculpture, poetry, history and a game of noughts and crosses in stone. It cost me nothing, and it was one of the richest journeys I have taken in years.
On value, and the smartest money in travel
We save for months, pay for flights and beds and meals out, and come home needing a holiday after the holiday. I want to talk about the part of a journey that costs almost nothing and lasts the longest.
